Kitesurf in Tarifa

The kitesurf in Tarifa rules. Most shops still sell windsurf equipment but everything is now focused on the Kite. Lift you sight and all you see are coloured kites decorating the sky. Now they are even out on days with strong winds and waves. In August some beaches are restricted but there is no messing arround when most people on the beach are either going into the water, coming out of it or just learning how to handle the lines on the beach!

Kiteboarding it very busy in summer and kiteboarders have to pay attention to the restrictions. If you are gong for a course I reccomend you book a course online.

Just as windsurfing was a combination between sailing and surfing, kite surfing is a combination between power kite flying and surfing. Even if first experiments were made with boogies and other land transportation, the water surface
seems to be the one where being moved by the kite works at its best.

The only controversy seems to be whether it derives from surfing, wake boarding, snowboarding....etc. In my opinion it has established its self an independant sport , considering the many associations and competitions spring up every where. Tarifa has just had its world cup in May. See results.

Why kite surfing is so popular is easy to understand. In weak winds, since the traction is almost vertical as respect to windsurfing (which is horizontal), planning requires much less wind force. In strong wind conditions the power available just screams for the most spectacular high and long jumps.
The time spent in the air and the relatively soft landing enhance tricks that
are only hampered by the kite's lines, (and your ability of course!) All this however does not come easy.
Beginners are recommended to understand the kites behaviour on land before they venture into the seas. This may take days as respect to hours! Best of course is to sign up for a course. Tarifa, naturally boasts many schools who not only offer these services but hire out equipment too.
Want to try it buy your self? Here are some tips. Basic theory
